It’s all about loving local…

In the Hilltops we can see the green Barwang vineyard from our Cellar Door, about 10km as the crows fly.

In Sydney our bolt holes are even closer, so it seemed that a

‘Neighbours’ Tasting around the corner at the Bonham Gallery (not the auctioneers)

would be the perfect collaboration.

So here is YOUR INVITATION to our

Lots of love and passion for FREEMAN Furmint 2024 from the crew at Young Gun of Wine…

‘The first and only example of a dry wine from the Hungarian variety furmint, also happens to be a delicious drop. Deft balance…and detail against big flavours and palate presence, we can chalk this one up as another win for Brian Freeman one of Australia’s foremost experts in alternative varieties.’

The Young Guns swirled and sipped the second FREEMAN Furmint release, which they commended for its

‘Beautiful burnished gold colour… with a cider-like nose of bruised green apple pulp and slippery apple skins, backed with rich, unctuous notes of lanolin. Underneath this, notes of hay, clover flower, beeswax, Greek mountain tea, lemon blossom and lemon pith gradually emerge. The palate is fresher than the relatively rich nose suggests, with a zesty acidity that pushes those apple flavours…in a broad, sherbet-like sweep – not at all linear or piercing, but definitely mouthwatering and refreshing. There’s serious flavour and fruit presence here that leads to a persistent finish – one with pronounced chalky minerality and a fine, slippery apple-skin texture… It’s a wine that can stand proudly next to Hungary’s best examples of dry furmint…’

So it’s a little bit special and quite rare. And definitely one to share if you have Hungarian family and friends!

Pet Nats (Petillant Naturale) sparkling wines arguably deserve more attention so we applaud the recent Young Gun of Wine Deep Dive into this natural effervescent wine style. Both FREEMAN Pet Nats were on the tasting table and both scored in the TOP TEN.
Naturally made and vegan friendly, these lightly sparkling wines were appreciated by the tasting panel whose comments included with the following commendations:
FREEMAN Pet Nat Prosecco ‘A wine of subtlety and delicate intrigue…’ ‘A Margarita comparison is hard to avoid…’
FREEMAN Pet Nat Rondinella ‘Delicately funky and lightly textured, this gently off-dry pét-nat is bright, playful, and effortlessly drinkable. Pale blush in the glass, it opens with fresh raspberry and strawberry notes, layered with subtle florals – think jasmine – and a touch of savoury intrigue. Fresh, balanced, and quietly complex, it’s the kind of bottle that disappears quickly…’
Better than a triple pike dive at the Olympics!

FREEMAN Vineyards sustainable viticulture program is largely supported by a flock of keen weed eaters, over 1000 head of easy-care self-shedding sheep that graze freely across the 200-hectare Hilltops NSW vineyard for much of the year. Their vineyard pick includes vine suckers, dangling vine canes and leaves and selected weeds. Only as the annual harvest approaches and the grapes ripen with sugary appeal are they moved to adjacent pasture. Observation over many seasons suggests the flock’s vinous preference is merlot. One fact for your next wine trivia night!

Our 10-year sustainable viti-management program recently featured in the NSW DPIRD Grapevine Management Guide 2025-26. And it’s hoped that our amalgamated learning inspires other vignerons to consider the benefits of an ovine vineyard crew.
