FREEMAN Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 Bottle Shot

Cabernet Sauvignon

NSW Hilltops has built its reputation on two classic varieties – cabernet sauvignon and shiraz. The earliest planting of these traditional red grapes at the FREEMAN Altura Vineyard dates back over 40 years.

TASTING NOTES

FREEMAN Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 is a deep magenta coloured young wine marked by ripe but fresh mulberry aromas and hints of cassis and cedar. The gentle tannin frame is balanced by ample flavour producing an integrated, mellow and persistent palate. A pure appealing and characteristic expression from a region recognised for its quality cabernets.

VITICULTURE & WINEMAKING

One variety that is synonymous with the cool Hilltops terroir is cabernet sauvignon – the classic Australian variety that thrives in a continental climate where warm days and cool nights are integral to cultivating balance and complexity.

The Altura Vineyard encompasses a block of mature 45-year-old cabernet vines. Selected bunches are handpicked with a yield of four tonnes per hectare.

The 2022 season was marked by a cool spring and summer with unseasonal rainfall but thankfully autumn was sunny and dry and the grapes ripened slowly and evenly, ideal for the final development of the fully ripe bunches. The grapes were harvested in early April with good acidity and balance.

The 2019 season was marked by a cool dry spring that reduced yields but resulted in the development of a balanced vine canopy. Thereafter, it was a very dry summer. This further restricted yields and resulted in significant flavour concentration enhanced even more by the cool slow-ripening autumn. Rain in early March was ideal for the final development of the fully ripe bunches. The grapes were harvested on 8 April with good acidity and balance.
